Where You Can Still Live on Less than $10 a Day
A new series, as ever, always with the emphasis on BUDGET TRAVEL. In this case we are moving into EXTREME BUDGET TRAVELLING. Where you can still live on less than $10 a day.
It's 2017 and this backpacker can still find places where he can live on less than $10 a day. For this project/theme we are talking about LIVING as opposed to TRAVELLING as he has seen enough THINGS for a while and is content to see and let be, as he walks the street looking for inspiring moments. So there are no transport costs bar the odd metro ticket and no entrance fees. He's rather fond on his morning coffee at his favourite chain. Why? cos he knows what he is in for. The taste is the same from the Philippines to London and down to Cape Town. He is never dissappointed! Today, it's his only vice. It kills 2 hours of his day yet it's worth the trade off for the amount of writing he gets done. His bank balance is depleted but has not yet gone back to couch surfing nor has he resorted to sleeping rough. His belly rumbles some days but that is not a bad thing. Hunger keeps him sharp! He's been on the road for 3 years 5 months, made some bad choices in the last months but things are on the up, again. Especially if he can keep on living on less than $10 a day. In fact his last 4 countries have seen him do that. Malaysia, The Philippines, Georgia and Ukraine. As of late he's tired of sleeping in dorm rooms, people are on the go 24hrs a day now, snoring, beeping phones and pain in the ass roomies who think nothing of calling their friends as others try to sleep. But alas, he has a way out, soon.
For this project living on less than $10 a day, Ukraine comes out tops. If he needs a beer, a bottle will cost him around 15UAH or @Palata No.6, a pint for just 16UAH. Beer in Malaysia is not cheap, about 3x more and that's just for a small can. Both countries allow him to stay for 90days. Malaysia has more food to his liking and here's the FINAL blow. In Melacca, Malaysia, he found the sikh temple where he would get a massive feed twice a day, lunch and dinner @The Gurdwara Sahib Melaka, gps: N 2.194957, E 102.254671
So where else is it still possible to live on less than the magical figure of $10 a day. To stand a chance you must be sleeping for about $5 a night. Anywhere west of Ukraine, FORGET IT! Russia? I googled hostels there. There are a few, but not many. Krygyzstan? Best price is $6. Managable. Like wise Kazakhstan. Tajikstan and the rest, you can forget that too. SE ASIA? I've detailed Malaysia. Thailand is possible but not as easy as it was. Cambodia, yes but not everywhere. Prices are on the rise. Prices in India have gone up but helped by the weak rupee. My friend was just in Dehli. She was paying 7$ for a dorm. Africa? depends where. Egypt is cheap if you just live. Bed and food are cheap. Sudan is cheap as is Malawi. In Kenya, only in Mtwapa, otherwise I paid $10 and higher. The rest of the east coast is pushing $10 a night. West Africa is easy in some areas. Morocco, Senegal, Gambia but getting hard to find single rooms for $5. Then as you go south the prices rise. Big time.
So moving on from paying your own way to how to live for almost free. Think Volunteering, House Sitting and becoming a monk. For all this and more, stay tuned...
