Faces from the Afghan Border Market
So I will spoil every body's fun and tell you the truth. Despite what nearly all high profile bloggers are saying, the Afghan Border Market is not, I repeat NOT, in Afghanistan.
It is very clearly still in Tajikistan. Yes you hand over your passport to the Tajik soldiers but you are not passing thru the immigration booth. The market is to the left and absolutely on the Tajik side of the river!
Three km out side of the Tajik village of Ishkashim, there is a weekly market.
It's always getting cancelled due to security issues but having waited for 5 days, in the hope that the market would be going ahead, the owner of the guest house hangs up her phone and gave us, me and 3 other travellers the good news.
With the current situation over the border, what you hear on western TV is not half the story when you see the reports on local TV, the Border Market is as close as you can get to Afghanistan without actually going there.
Locals come from both sides to set up there stalls and sell whatever they have to sell. The men don't worry about us taking photos, infact they were quite happy to pose.
